Parallel drum compression: big drums that keep their punch

Compress hard, blend back. The setup behind big rock and pop drums, without a send bus.

PINCH-76 set for parallel drum compression with MIX at 35 %

Why do the drums on a big rock record sound huge and still hit hard? Usually because of parallel drum compression. It blends a heavily compressed copy of the drums with the untouched drums. The dry signal keeps the attack; the compressed signal brings up the body, the room and the sustain. With a MIX knob on the compressor you no longer need a send bus.

Why parallel works

Normal compression turns the loud parts down. That controls the drums but can flatten the hits. Parallel compression does the opposite: it brings the quiet parts up. The transients stay as they were, and everything between them gets bigger.

The setup in PINCH-76

Put one instance on the drum bus. Compress much harder than you would in series, 6 to 10 dB of reduction, then bring the natural kit back with MIX.

ATTACK 2 is slow for a FET, so some of the hit gets through the compressed path too. RELEASE 6 recovers quickly, which pulls up the room and the decay between hits. The sidechain filter at 80 Hz stops the kick from controlling the whole bus.

MIX or DRY: which one?

PINCH-76 has two parallel controls, and they do different jobs.

Control What it does Use it when
MIX Crossfades between dry and compressed. Total level stays about the same. You want to dial in "how much compressor".
DRY Adds the untouched signal on top, at a level you choose. You want the classic parallel bus move: full compression plus dry drums.

Use one or the other, not both. For the DRY approach, leave MIX at 100 % and bring DRY up from OFF until the kit regains its attack. DRY follows MIX, so turning MIX down lowers the dry signal too.

Make it louder: all-buttons in parallel

For the famous rock drum sound, switch the compressed side to all-buttons mode in Rev A. It pumps, splashes and distorts, and in parallel that energy sits under a clean kit. NUKE in the ADVANCED drawer adds an all-buttons layer beside your main setting, so you can keep ratio 4 and still get the smash.

Hear what the compressor does

Press DELTA to hear only what the compressor removes. If you hear whole drum hits in DELTA, the compressed side is eating your transients; slow ATTACK by one step. If DELTA is almost silent, push INPUT further.

Three variations to try

  1. Room mics only. Leave the close mics alone and put PINCH-76 on the room mics in all-buttons mode with MIX at 40 to 60 %. The kit gets bigger without the snare losing its crack.
  2. Snare only. Rev A, ATTACK 3, RELEASE 6, about 10 dB of reduction, MIX at 30 %. The snare gets body and ring without a longer reverb.
  3. Whole mix, very low. On the mix bus, MIX at 10 to 15 % with heavy compression on the parallel side lifts the quiet parts of a song. Keep it subtle and check in context.

One rule covers all three: parallel always makes things louder, so match levels before you decide. Past about 50 % MIX, the blend starts to sound like plain compression again.
